Chapel Hill, NC –Chapel Hill Attorney Melissa Averett, founder of Averett Family Law, and Catherine Flowers, founder of PI Leadership Academy, will co-present a seminar on workplace violence in July for members of the North Carolina Rate Bureau. In this collaborative session, Averett will address steps employers may take to prevent workplace violence, while Flowers will focus on what employees should do during a violent incident.

“Many employers are unaware that they have the ability to request protective orders on behalf of employees who are being threatened,” says Averett, an NC Certified Family Law Specialist. “This approach is often faster and easier than having the individual request the protective order. In addition, a proactive approach by the employer can also help limit liability. All employers should encourage any employee who is being harassed or threatened – whether by a partner, stranger, co-worker, or even a customer – to report it to management immediately so steps can be taken to protect not only that individual but others who may inadvertently be harmed.”

Recognizing the importance of preparedness, Flowers adds, “While prevention is ideal, it’s crucial to acknowledge the reality that workplace violence can occur. By conducting risk evaluations and implementing proper protocols, employers can better equip their teams. Our active shooter training programs provide comprehensive support in this regard.” Catherine “Cat” Flowers is a former law enforcement officer and a veteran private investigator, will focus on empowering employees with knowledge about handling violent incidents in the workplace. She has expertise in risk assessment, understanding employee activity, and building security.
